Banyana in good shape ahead of African Champs

BANYANA Banyana coach Vera Pauw is happy with the team's progress in the build-up to the ninth African Women's Championship finals in Namibia in October.

Pauw said a series of friendly games Banyana are playing helped the technical staff get the team into good shape.

The South Africans are in camp preparing for Sunday's friendly with Zambia in Lusaka.

The Zambians have also qualified for the finals of this biennial eight-nation tournament.

Pauw said they were going for a win. "I saw them two years ago, but I'm confident we will beat them. We expect a good game because they have also qualified for the championship."

Speaking at their media day at Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto yesterday, Pauw said they will play four more games before going to Namibia.

"Our preparations for the tournament in Namibia are going well. The girls have been working hard and want to make the country proud.

"We just need to be more clinical up front. We have to do well in Namibia to qualify for the World Cup finals in Canada."

The Dutch coach said they want to play four more friendlies after Sunday's games.

"We have two games already confirmed. The first one will be against Tanzania on August 31; we will also play Ivory Coast in September. The other two games will be confirmed next week. We need to play against strong opposition so we will identify the areas where we need to improve."
