SA could fill in as Cosafa Cup hosts

SOUTH Africa could step in as hosts for the 2014 Cosafa Cup after the tournament in Botswana scheduled for September was cancelled.

Should South Africa be confirmed as new hosts, the tournament will be played in November or December, with a decision likely to be made this week.

The event would be good preparation for Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba's national side should Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

That is if Mashaba, pictured, can persuade Premier Soccer League clubs to release their home-based players.

The PSL had created a two-week break in league action for the tournament in Botswana from September 13-28, and could conceivably move that to take into consideration the new dates.

The event in Botswana was cancelled after Cosafa failed to find a sponsor in time, though Sowetan understands that they have secured an agreement for the 2015 Cosafa Cup that will be played at a venue still to be determined.

South Africa last hosted the finals of the tournament in 2008, the same year they were also last crowned champions. The tournament was not held between 2010 and 2012 as Cosafa failed to secure sponsorship, but returned in 2013 when Zambia staged a successful tournament.

South Africa finished third.
