Mokoena president of new players union

MAMELODI Sundowns attacking midfielder Lebohang "Cheese" Mokoena has been appointed interim president of a new players union, which is a rival of the more established South African Football Players' Union.

The Professional Footballers Association of South Africa (PFASA) was launched in Braamfontein yesterday with former Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars midfielder Daniel "Sailor" Tshabalala serving as chairman.

PFASA has also roped in Forwardsure to provide professional and administrative assistance to their members to deal with insurance policies and investments, among other things.

Mokoena said the position will not affect his playing career at Sundowns.

"We are coming with a vibrant structure to benefit the players. It hurts to read in Sunday tabloids about former players who are struggling financially because they did not save money or invest. I used to be a member of Safpu but I quit because I could see they were doing nothing for players.

"I raised my concerns at various meetings but nothing was done."

PFASA chief executive Cappy Matutoane - who was chief negotiator at Safpu before crossing the floor - said: "The majority of football players, approximately 90% of them, are under 35 and therefore represent the youth of this country ...it is prudent for all of us to advance the interests of footballers for a successful future."

Approached for comment, Safpu media officer Peter Khoabane said: "We are aware that a new union has been formed, we are not worried because our track record is there for everybody to see.

"We welcome them in the industry because they are not a threat to us."

Safpu, an affiliate of Cosatu, is recognised by both Safa and the PSL.
