Mchunu needs more KO wins

PRESSURE is mounting on Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu to come out of his cocoon and explode in the faces of his opponents if he is to crack it in the US.

Mchunu has done it here in South Africa, and the land of the dollar could be where his future lies as a boxer.

The Maritzburg-born fighter has inked a two-year deal with America's Main Events, one of the world's top boxing promoters.

The deal was penned in October after Mchunu's win against Eddie Chambers. Main Events chief executive Kathy Duva said Mchunu's absolute domination of Chambers on NBC Fight Night was a revelation.

"He is the kind of fighter who can alter the landscape in the bigger weight classes for years to come," said Duva, who then gave Mchunu a chance to fight for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) title.

The diminutive boxer grabbed it with both hands, outpointing US-based Nigerian Olanrewaju Durodola at Resorts International Casino in Atlantic City.

Mchunu returns to the US to defend against American Garret Wilson on September 20.

The fight will headline a co-promotion between Main Events and Showpony Promotions on NBC Sport.

Showpony chief executive Damian Michael acknowledges Mchunu's capabilities. He said his charge will not only win a world title but unify them.

"Thabiso has the skills to outbox anyone on the planet, but recently he has realised that he needs to entertain an American audience and start getting the job done via KO," said Michael.

The fact that Mchunu has realised that he needs to win by knockout in order to entertain the American audience simply means that he has to go in there and get cracking.

Rated number two by the World Boxing Council, seventh by the International Boxing Federation and 10th by the World Boxing Organisation, Mchunu must blow Wilson away in order to make it easy for Duva and Michael to negotiate for the WBC's championship committee to force cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk to give him a chance.

Said Mchunu: "I know Wilson - he is a fighter but he won't give me any problems. The fight will not go the distance."
