Zimbabwean Denver swops universities

ZIMBABWEAN international midfielder Denver Mukamba is moving to the University of Pretoria from Bidvest Wits, it was confirmed yesterday.

The 22-year-old arrived at Wits at the start of 2013 as a high-profile signing after being named footballer of the year in Zimbabwe.

But in one-and-a-half seasons at Wits, he made just four starts and five substitute appearances and did not score a goal.

Mukamba, pictured, had impressed on trials with the Clever Boys after he helped Harare-based Dynamos win the league and cup double for second successive year in 2012.

He won the prestigious Soccer Star of the Year award with a R40000 cash prize. He was also second in the Zimbabwe league goal-scoring charts with 11 strikes for Dynamos in 2012.

In 2011, he had won the Rookie of the Year award.

At AmaTuks, Mukamba joins three fellow new signings - Atusaye Nyondo, who has moved on a permanent deal from SuperSport United, Sfiso Nzimande from Witbank Spurs and Vuyisile Ntombayithethi from relegated Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The transfer was confirmed by Wits CEO Jose Ferreira.

Meanwhile, influential Wits midfielder Papy Faty is recovering well after a second operation on his knee, but prognosis for the Burundian international remains a season on the sidelines.

Ferreira said Faty's delayed second surgery had taken place last week and that doctors had expressed their satisfaction with the outcome. "He will now begin his rehabilitation, but unfortunately he is going to be out for the season. It is a big blow to us," he said.

Faty had surgery immediately after suffering the injury against Orlando Pirates towards the end of last season, but a second corrective operation was always scheduled.
