Unpaid boxers get their money

SANITY has prevailed and all boxers who fought at Thohoyandou Town Hall in Venda on June 28 have finally been paid their long overdue purse money.

The tournament, which comprised seven bouts, was jointly staged by Tshiawelo Boxing Promotions and Limpopo Champions Promotions.

Former SA featherweight champion Sydney "Skeleton" Maluleka, who lost in his bid to win the Limpopo provincial featherweight title against Prince Ndlovu, confirmed having been paid by Boxing South Africa (BSA). "Yes, finally I have been paid," Maluleka said.

BSA's manager in Gauteng Archie Nyingwa, who supervised the tournament, also confirmed the news that boxers have been paid what was due to them.

"I am happy that boxers have been paid," said Nyingwa.

"This will not happen again. We are following the rules and regulations that if purse monies are not deposited with Boxing SA within 30 or 14 days, there will be no tournament."

Budding promoter Phathutshedzo Dongola, the former professional boxer who owns Limpopo Champions Promotions, said: "The remainder of the purse monies [R20000] was deposited on Tuesday last week. I am relieved that finally we have sorted this out. I just want to apologise to all stakeholders, including Boxing South Africa."
