Young guns hope to shine at box-and-dine

TESTING BOUT: Paul Kamanga
TESTING BOUT: Paul Kamanga

YOUNG guns Paul "The Natural" Kamanga, Ricardo "The Slayer" Hiraman and Ronald "King" Malindi are ready to do some damage.

These prospects will be in action in a box-and-dine tournament at Emperors Palace tonight presented by African Ring and Golden Gloves.

Veteran promoters Jeff Ellis and Rodney Berman have put together a seven-bout card that will be headlined by Kamanga, who will be taking a step towards stardom. The 20-year-old, who is undefeated in 12 fights, will oppose Boitshepo Mandawe for the vacant WBA Pan African junior welterweight title.

Mandawe has failed in three attempts to win the national welterweight title. Kamanga has not been able to go that route because he is from Congo, which is why trainer Anton Gilmore and manager Brian Mitchell are pursuing the Pan African title.

Mitchell said victory for his charge will pave the way for a youth title in September, though he did not say under which sanctioning body.

The fight tonight is a stern test of character for Kamanga.

Mandawe, 29, is a fearless fighter who hardly takes a step back.

Another fighter to look out for is Hiraman, the 24-year-old Indian schoolteacher from Durban who has three knockout wins from as many fights. Hiraman takes on Ayanda Nkosi in the featherweights over four rounds.

Malindi, 19, is the former SA amateur champion who has blown away two opponents at the same venue. The youngster, who is trained by Bernie Pailman, will face Teboho Setsike in the bantamweight division.

Meanwhile, Joey "Stinging" Stiglingh makes a comeback after a year-long absence when he takes on Rofhiwa Maema in the lightweight class over four rounds.
