Bloem tycoon to buy Phunya SeleSele

FREE State businessman Max Tshabalala yesterday finally confirmed his family has submitted an offer to buy crowd pullers Bloemfontein Celtic.

The deal is expected to be finalised this week after Celtic chairman Jimmy Augousti returned from Brazil yesterday as part of the Premier Soccer League delegation attending the World Cup.

The agreement between the two parties, which is facilitated by senior Free State government officials, is that Celtic will be sold to Tshabalala for R45-million.

Tshabalala is the owner of Roses United, who were relegated from the National First Division to the Safa ABC Motsepe League at the end of last season.

"We [the Tshabalala family] have put in an offer through our lawyers to buy Celtic. We are still waiting for the management of Celtic to indicate if they accept our offer or not," said Tshabalala.

"The agreement we signed with Celtic has a confidentiality clause, therefore it will be difficult for me to go deeper into the details until all the paperwork has been completed.

"All that I can say at the moment is that there are some documents we are waiting for from Celtic. We have to respect the process.

"It is the Tshabalala family that is involved in this deal, there is no other person.

"Celtic has a rich history in South African soccer, that is why the Tshabalala family has decided to make an offer to buy it."

Augousti could not be reached for comment, but chief executive Khumbulani Konco claims he was not aware about the offer from the Tshabalalas to buy Phunya SeleSele.

Towards the end of last season there were reports that a consortium in Cape Town wanted to buy the club but it seems they could not reach an agreement with Celtic.

Two years ago former Azapo president Professor Itumeleng Mosala also made an unsuccessful bid to buy Celtic, who are one of the oldest clubs in the Premier Soccer League.

They were formed in 1969 under the name Mangaung United FC. In 1984, Petros Molemela bought the club and renamed it Bloemfontein Celtic.

In 2001, Molemela sold the club to Augousti, a former Celtic player, in a deal worth R600000 but on condition he would not sell it to people outside Mangaung.

Celtic have signed Bevan Fransman from SuperSport United, Ruben Cloete from Maritzburg United and midfielder Sici Shelembe from National First Division side Witbank Spurs.
