Suarez, Cavani to lead Uruguay in Brazil 2014

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez unveiled Monday a preliminary squad of 25 players who are set to take part in the last stage of preparations towards next month's World Cup.

As expected, the team is set to be led by world-class strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani and also features veteran Diego Forlan. In defence, Diego Godin and Martin Caceres emerge as the leaders, but veteran team captain Diego Lugano is still on hand to help.

The midfield line is less impressive, at least on paper, but again features long-standing Uruguay pillars like Alvaro Pereira, Cristian Rodriguez and Sebastian Eguren. Uruguay, who were fourth in the 2010 World Cup and won the prestigious Copa America two years later, had trouble qualifying for Brazil 2014.

They needed a play-off against Jordan to secure their berth. Tabarez, who named three extra players set to be on call but not expected to join training, is set to narrow his squad down to 23 men by June 2, in line with FIFA requirements. The Uruguay coach hopes to have all his men in Montevideo by May 25.

The South American team, who won two distant World Cups in 1930 and 1950, are set to start Brazil 2014 in Group D, alongside England, Italy and Costa Rica.

Preliminary Uruguay squad: Goalkeepers:
