Hougaard back in favoured No 9 spot

THE knee injury to Piet van Zyl, which has ruled him out of action for at least two weeks, may be a blessing in disguise for the Bulls.

A Van Zyl-less Bulls side will mean that Francois Hougaard, the first-choice scrumhalf, will return to where he belongs and where he has excelled the most - in the No9 jersey.

Van Zyl bashed his knee in the Bulls' 19-12 loss to the Waratahs on Saturday. In that game and the one before it, a 20-17 defeat to the Highlanders, Hougaard played on the wing, where he failed to have as much of an impact as he has had at No9.

Coach Frans Ludeke will be hoping the half-back combination of Hougaard and flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter will be able to reignite the Bulls as they chase an elusive overseas win.

The outcome of the disciplinary hearing for captain Flip van der Merwe, who was cited for punching Waratahs prop Paddy Ryan, is only expected today.
