Chiefs in a corner

YET another Kaizer Chiefs fixture was postponed yesterday following confirmation from CAF that Amakhosi would play their Confederation Cup return leg play-off match against Asec Mimosas on Sunday.

The trip to Abidjan, Ivory Coast this weekend forced the Premier League to move Chiefs' away clash at University of Pretoria in Nelspruit on Saturday to May 6, meaning the defending champions cannot catch up to log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns just yet.

The Brazilians are six points clear at the top, but coach Pitso Mosimane has moaned about the "advantage" Amakhosi have with two games in hand. Chiefs' fixtures come thick and fast because of their continental commitments, starting with tonight's league encounter against Bidvest Wits at Milpark Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7.30pm.

Yesterday, subsequent to a social media storm after comments made by Stuart Baxter about the Confederations Cup, club football manager Bobby Motaung reiterated Amakhosi's obligation to honour the fixture on Sunday. Asec beat Chiefs 2-1 at Dobsonville Stadium at the weekend.

"We don't have a choice and this could drag on because if we beat Asec, we go into the group stages of the tournament," Motaung said, two days after Baxter explained why the competition was "not worth our time".

Motaung added: "We must be careful how we approach these games because we don't want to hurt our brand. we want to protect it by doing well in every game we play in. People say we underestimated Asec, but I thought we couldn't have won that game with that team. But it is up to the coach how he approaches going to Abidjan."

Amakhosi's immediate focus will be on attempting to get maximum points against The Clever Boys tonight, with defeat giving title rivals Sundowns a leg up.

And Wits skipper Sibusiso Vilakazi said they were eager to hold on to their impressive home record, where they have been beaten once in 12 league matches this season despite falling out of the Premiership race at the weekend. The Students are also unbeaten in their past six league games.

"We are no longer in the title race, but that hasn't distracted us from a top-two finish. I think this club needs to play in the African Champions League and we won't do Chiefs any favours. We want to fight until the end because for us the season is still not over," Vilakazi said.

Bernard Parker is expected to lead Chiefs' attack.
