NFD matches can fill void in Mother City

CAPE Town fans will likely have to turn their attention to the National First Division for the remainder of the season after the last top-flight game was played in the city more than a month before the scheduled end of the campaign.

Ajax Cape Town's home match with SuperSport United last night was the final one in the Mother City for the Urban Warriors this season as their final three games are all to be played away.

It leaves a vacuum of top-flight football for a city that has had a steady stream over the last 15 years and in the 2010-2011 campaign had three teams - Ajax, Santos and Vasco Da Gama - bringing Premier Soccer League football to Cape Town.

Those wishing to watch live professional football will have to go from the Cape Town Stadium to Parow Park, the NNK Rugby Stadium, Grassy Park Stadium and old favourite Athlone to watch one of the five Cape Town teams competing in the NFD.

It does seem odds-on that the situation will not be repeated next year with Chippa United, who are coached by Vladislav Heric, needing a single point from their four remaining fixtures to return to the top flight.

And they could yet be joined by a third Cape Town team with Milano United, Santos and Vasco all potential candidates to finish in the promotion play-off positions if they have a strong finish to the regular season.

There is one other potential last fling for the PSL in Cape Town this season, though it remains a remote possibility. Should Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates and go through to the final of the Nedbank Cup against Bidvest Wits or Kaizer Chiefs, it would remove Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal as potential hosts for the decider.

That may open the door for the Cape Town Stadium to be used for the final.
