How the last 8 stack up

THE Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw has thrown giants of the local game together in some massive matches that will define the season for some of the teams involved.

We look at the history of the four clashes and find plenty of cause for hype.

KAIZER CHIEFS VS SUPERSPORT UNITED (tomorrow, 3pm)

This match is a repeat of the 2013 Nedbank Cup final that went to extra time and was eventually won by Chiefs after a Bernard Parker goal separated the sides. There have been 11 previous cup matches between the sides. SuperSport won four in a row up until the SAA Supa 8 final in 2004, but since then it has been six on the trot from Chiefs.

In the 58 matches played in all competitions between the sides since 1990, Chiefs have 23 wins to SuperSport's 22 and have outscored their opponents 71-66.

AFRICAN WARRIORS VS MARITZ BURG UNITED (tomorrow, 3pm)

This fixture between second-tier African Warriors and Maritzburg United is a repeat of the 2008 meeting in the same competition. Warriors claimed a 2-1 win away from home on that occasion thanks to goals from Molefe Mbele and Mohlolo Nhlapo. Lucky Nene was on target for United. Steve Komphela's side will be heavy favourites, but Warriors are generally strong in the Free State.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS ORLANDO PIRATES

Sundowns and Pirates have a curious recent history that has seen the away side favoured in clashes between the two. There has not been a home win in this fixture in the seven games, with the last four of those having been won by the away the side. The cup record between the sides is even, with eight wins each and 10 draws in their 26 previous knockout games since the formation of the National Soccer League (NSL). Pirates have won just once away at Sundowns in cup games, though. They have had two recent meetings in the Nedbank Cup with a win apiece. Sundowns triumphed 3-1 in the quarterfinal in 2010, but a year later Pirates got their revenge with a 1-0 first-round win.

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC VS BIDVEST WITS (Sunday, 3pm)

Celtic and Wits will be meeting in cup competitions for the second time this season after The Clever Boys triumphed 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the MTN8. But that was away from Celtic's Free State stronghold and Wits are unlikely to have it as easy having not claimed an away win at Phunya SeleSele since 2008. Celtic have only beaten Wits in cups in the NSL era on one occasion, though - the 1999 Rothman's cup semifinal first leg. Wits have won the six other knockout fixtures between the two.
