Stephanie Rice retires from swimming

Triple Olympic champion Stephanie Rice officially retired from competitive swimming on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Beijing gold medalist confirmed the news via a video posted on her website. The injury-plagued Rice had not raced competitively since her unsuccessful 2012 London Games campaign, having undergone three shoulder operations.

Rice won both individual medleys over 200 and 400 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, setting a world record in each. She then won a third gold with the Australian 4x200-meter freestyle relay team, also in a world record time.

She did not say what she will do next, but said she wanted to "prove myself out of the water." She has been involved in fashion work in the past.
