Makhanya out to take the Cape

CROSS-country and road running star Mapaseka Makhanya will start the defence of her Spar Grand Prix title in Cape Town on Sunday.

Makhanya is hoping to begin this year's campaign in the women's 10km Challenge series with a victory, after she finished second behind Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahora in last year's opening race.

The Cape Town and Port Elizabeth legs of the series were the only two Makhanya failed to win last year.

"We are definitely going to Cape Town and are confident of wining the event this time round. She is working hard to win the grand prix again too," said Makhanya's coach Lungile Bikwani yesterday.

Makhanya, who is also hoping to qualify for the marathon at the 2015 World Championships, drove away in a new car last year after winning the grand prix.

Irvette van Zyl, wife of 400m hurdles ace Louis "LJ" van Zyl, has won the event twice and Poppy Mlambo once.

Van Zyl is not flying to Cape Town due to injury but other top runners like the Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebohang, three-time champion Rene Kalmer, Jenna Challenor, Zintle Xiniwe and Catherine Skosana will put up a strong challenge.
