Mixed fortunes for Andile Jali

ANDILE Jali made his debut for Oostende in midweek and even scored in the penalty shootout, but suffered another cup heartbreak as his team tumbled out of the Belgian Cup semifinals.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder had not played in all the build-up to the second-leg tie, but was on the bench and brought on at half-time, an indication of the quick impact he has made since joining just over a week ago.

By the time he came on the score was 1-1, with visitors Lokeren having netted as early as the second minute, but Oostende equalising 20 minutes later.

The early goal wiped out the advantage that Oostende had from the first leg last week, where they forced a 1-1 away draw. With the tie level on aggregate, the two sides went into extra time and then onto a thrilling penalty shootout.

Ayanda Patosi, who also came on as a substitute, missed Lokeren's first kick, allowing Oostende to go 2-0 up in the shootout when Jali casually converted. Oostende were 4-2 up after four kicks each, but failed to press home their advantage and it went to sudden death at 4-4.

Nyasha Mushekwi also scored for Oostende, but they eventually lost 9-8 on kicks. Oostende miss out on a first-ever Belgian Cup final appearance. They had last made the semifinals 87 years ago, so Wednesday's defeat came as a major blow to the club.

For Jali, it means he misses out on yet another cup final this season - having already suffered the trauma of finishing on the losing end in the MTN8, African Champions League and Telkom Knockout finals in recent months.
