Makhanya could be forced to quit

LOOKING AROUND: Joseph Makhanya is battling to be taken on by a top-tier club but his manager believes he still has a lot to offer

FRUSTRATED Joseph Makhanya could be forced to retire from professional football due to a lack of interest from PSL clubs in his services.

The former Orlando Pirates winger has had doors slammed in his face by several clubs, with some unwilling to gamble on the 32-year-old because of his age.

Makhanya, who last played for Moroka Swallows, could not be entirely drawn on his future in the game yesterday, saying: ''Speak to my manager because I don't know what is happening with my career at the moment."

His manager, Xolani Nhleko, said yesterday that several professional clubs have shown interest in the midfielder, but the fact that he hardly appeared for Swallows last season proved to be a hindrance.

''It's been a tough season for him," said Nhleko. ''He did not start games as much last season and that has been a problem for the clubs. He is a dedicated man who has an excellent disciplinary record and an incredible work ethic.

''We have spoken to all the mid-log [table] teams in the PSL to no avail. Some teams showed interest but came up with unreasonable offers.

''Other teams complained about his age and the fact that he did not play regularly. It then becomes difficult to market the player. But we are not going to give up on him.

"We still believe that it's early in the season and as a free agent it would be easy for him to join any team that comes with a better offer."

Platinum Stars are among the high-profile teams who spoke to the player.

After 11 years with Pirates, Makhanya was loaned out to Mpumalanga Black Aces before joining Swallows last season.

Meanwhile, Mbulelo "OJ" Mabizela - who has played soccer at the highest level abroad - also seems to have reached the end of his career.

The gifted defender shot to prominence when he played for the Buccaneers more than a decade ago.

He joined Mamelodi Sundowns, Dikwena and BidVest Wits in the later years of his career but his stock seemed to take a dip when he signed up with Chippa United, who were relegated to the lower tier after just one season in the top flight.
