SOUTH African 800m and 1 500m champion Mapaseka Makhanya is expected to continue her monopoly of the Spar Women's 10km series in Pretoria tomorrow and move a step closer to winning a new car.
Makhanya, who runs in the colours of Transnet Athletics Club, tops the table with a total of 67 points after winning the Durban leg of the series last month. She finished second in Cape Town and third in Port Elizabeth.
Attempts to speak to Makhanya were unsuccessful but she is reported to be in great shape and geared up to make it two in a row.
Christine Kalmer is second on 48 points, with former Grand Prix champion Irvette van Zyl and Myrette Filmater, joint third with 40. Christine's sister Rene and Nolene Conrad have 34 points each.
With the overall winner driving home a Nissan Micra, the Grand Prix runner-up will receive R30 000 and third placed gets R17 500.
Saturday's race will see the return of former winner Rene Kalmer who was forced to withdraw from the Port Elizabeth leg through a calf injury sustained during the Boston marathon.
The older Kalmer sister has vowed to stop Makhanya from getting yet another win.
"My training is going well and I''m feeling very good. I lost a bit of ground in the Grand Prix because I could not run in Port Elizabeth. I'm aiming for a top three Grand Prix finish."
Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahoro is one to watch out for, though she does not qualify for the Grand Prix prize by virtue of not being a South African citizen.
