Board to hear Khenyeza appeal

CONTROVERSIAL striker Mabhuti Khenyeza will finally have a date with the South African Football Association appeals board next week with the hope of convincing them to either set aside or reduce his 12-month ban.

Safa communications director Dominic Chimhavi said the matter will be heard by the board, convened by Alex Abercrombie, either on Monday or Tuesday.

At the time of going to press, Safa's legal team was still trying to get members of the appeals board to agree on a date.

Kenyeza, who has gone to ground since he was banned by the Premier Soccer League disciplinary committee two weeks ago for spitting at and swearing referee Zakhele Siwela, lodged an appeal with Safa last Thursday, paying the required R10000 fee.

"I can confirm that Mabhuti's case will be heard sometime next week. We will make an announcement before the end of the week, once our legal team has rounded up all members of the appeals board," said Chimhavi.

"His club, Ajax Cape Town, are supporting him. They have made it clear the verdict is too harsh."

The case has the potential to end Khenyeza's career after Ajax said it would be difficult for them to offer him a new contract if he were idle for 12 months.
