Majority go for spider

KAIZER Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng "Spider" Khune has received the most votes in the 2013 Carling Black Label Cup with just over 1.3 million votes, which puts him in the starting line-up for the reigning Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup holders.

Chiefs take on perennial rivals Orlando Pirates in the annual off-season match at FNB Stadium on July 27, which is expected to be a sold-out affair, with more than 62984 tickets already bought by yesterday.

In the Chiefs line-up Khune is followed by striker Bernard Parker with 351192 votes, with Lehlohonolo Majoro third on 350 666. Majoro is followed by winger Siphiwe Tshabalala, who has 327 298 and Reneilwe Letsholonyane on 299337.

Defender Mulomowandau Mathoho has amassed 240827 votes, Siboniso Gaxa 229557, George Lebese 210820, Tsepo Masilela 210 639, Sthembiso Ngcobo 170030, Tefu Mashamaite 181968, Willard Katsande 148770 and Siyabonga Nkosi 125942.

At Pirates, goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa is top with 475207 votes, with outgoing deputy Moeneeb Josephs on 379816.

Of the defenders, Happy Jele has received 156112 votes, Thabo Matlaba 138258, Siyabonga Sangweni 188354, Lucky Lekgwathi 134689 and Rooi Mahamutsa 95354.

In the middle of the park, Oupa Manyisa is sitting on 139502 votes, Andile Jali on 136074, Tlou Segolela has 117848, Sifiso Myeni 108801 and Daine Klate 103269.

The attacking line is made up of Collins Mbesuma (170616), Takesure Chinyama (127342) and Ndumiso Mabena (98244).

The organisers of the match have announced that more than 11 million votes have been cast to date, including those for Benni McCarthy, Jimmy Tau, Morgan Gould and Jimmy Jambo, who won't be featuring in this event.

McCarthy has retired from professional soccer to pursue a coaching career, while Tau's contract with Chiefs was not renewed. Gould and Jambo are still out of action because of injuries.

Stadium Management South Africa chairman Jacques Grobbelaar said they expected a full house.

"It's just a matter of days before we make an announcement on this because the ticket sales are going very well."

Pirates have won the Carling Black Label Cup since its inception three seasons ago.
