THE 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals have come and gone, but some of its volunteers have yet to be paid.

This has resulted in the local organising committee (LOC) stepping in to put pressure on municipalities that were hosts to pay the volunteers who contributed to the success of the event.

Sowetan has learnt that each volunteer was supposed to be given an allowance of R200 a day for 25 days. Many of those whose money is still outstanding come from Rustenburg and Mbombela.

LOC chief communications officer Sipho Sithole confirmed that some of the volunteers had not been paid.

"It's something that is beyond our control because when the Treasury released money for the tournament, part of it went straight into the coffers of the municipalities, which included the volunteers' remuneration," Sithole said.

"The only money that came to the committee from the Treasury was used for operations during the tournament. We are engaging the municipalities to process their payments as a matter of urgency.

"I can confirm that volunteers in Joburg were paid last week by the municipality. Payments for the volunteers in Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay were processed yesterday [on Monday].

"One of the issues that caused the delay is that the time to reconcile the number of days worked by all the volunteers took longer than anticipated. Some of them worked for 25 days, others 18 and some far less. They will get their money."

One volunteer in Rustenburg, who asked not to be identified, said: "They keep saying the money will be deposited every time we phone them, but they never deliver."
