Boxing 'champion' in trouble for hiding pregnancy

NAILED: Lizbeth Sivhaga
NAILED: Lizbeth Sivhaga

LIZBETH Sivhaga is still in serious trouble with Boxing SA, because she tried to fool the authorities into allowing her to fight when she knew she was pregnant.

In December, the Limpopo fighter presented an improper medical certificate that declared her fit to defend her SA flyweight title in East London.

"Her status as the champion hangs in the balance," said Boxing SA chief executive Moffat Qithi.

Sivhaga's mandatory defence against Noxolo Makhanavu at Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre was cancelled after a doctor in East London, who examined her at the request of BSA's provincial manager Phakamile Jacobs, found out that she was pregnant. No fighter can enter the ring if she is more than seven days pregnant.

Jacobs became suspicious when Sivhaga presented him with an unstamped but signed medical certificate. "I am told that Sivhaga did not go to the doctor who conducts pregnancy tests on her in Polokwane, instead she went to went to a male nurse at a clinic in Thohoyandou," Qithi said.
