Take a bow Bafana but ...

.

IT WAS refreshing to hear Gordon Igesund, for once, not talking about the drawing board.

Instead, the Bafana Bafana coach, in a post-match interview after their 2-0 success over Angola in Durban on Wednesday night, spoke about attack, attack and more attack from his charges.

He spoke about keeping the momentum going in the team by winning their last Group A match against Morocco on Sunday.

We are glad he won't be visiting the drawing board again ahead of the Morocco clash, because if it ain't broke, why fix it? It wouldn't make sense to tamper with a winning team.

Igesund admitted that he took a gamble when he opted for an attacking line-up against Angola.

That's the way it should stay as far as Bafana are concerned in this tournament, which South Africa is hosting.

Drastic changes were warranted after the drab draw against Africa Cup of Nations finals debutants Cape Verde because another first-round exit in a tournament on home soil would have been almost treasonous.

The courage the coach showed on Wednesday by wielding the axe and thereby sending a clear message that no player is guaranteed a permanent position in the squad, is admirable.

Players should not be in the starting IX because of reputation, but what they can deliver, NOW.

The coach must also not hold back in getting rid of his captain Bongani Khumalo if he continues to be as suspect as he has been at the back.

Khumalo thanked the crowd at the Moses Mabhida Stadium for their support and declared hopes that they would continue to rally behind the team in their next matches.

We, too, hope that South African will continue to back Bafana.

The nation has always stood by the team, despite belief to the contrary. Criticism of the team doesn't necessarily mean that critics are unpatriotic.

We are glad that the faith shown in Bafana was repaid so handsomely on Wednesday, we deserve that much as a people.

We also noted that one Steve Pienaar - yes, he who dumped Bafana in a huff last year, announcing his retirement from national duty - was quick to tweet, congratulating Bafana for the win.

So please Bafana, don't let the supporters down again - beat Morocco comprehensively to prove that your mid-week win was not a fluke.

Don't rest on your laurels because you are not in the quarter-finals yet.
