The top 10 PSL games of 2012

THE year 2012 has seen some remarkable matches played in the Premier Soccer League, with drama and goals aplenty.

Sowetan selects our 10 best from the last 11 months.

February 2 - Absa Premiership

Ajax Cape Town 3,

Platinum Stars 2

Stars have a dismal record in Cape Town. They must have thought they had this one in the bag, though, as Sibusiso Msomi and Thuso Phala put them two goals to the good going into the final two minutes. But Lebohang Manyama hit back from the penalty spot and Matthew Booth equalised from a corner, before Cecil Lolo bundled in the Ajax winner.

February 22 - Absa Premiership

Platinum Stars 3

Orlando Pirates 4

Stars fell behind to an Innocent Mkhabela own goal but came back to lead 2-1. They deserved their lead, but as was the case so often under Owen da Gama, capitulated .

March 4 - Nedbank Cup, first round

Powerlines 0

Mamelodi Sundowns 24

Hlompho Kekana scored seven, Nyasha Mushekwi six and Richard Henyekane five as hapless fourth-tier side Powerlines FC were humiliated by the record scoreline in Kimberley .

March 13 - Nedbank Cup, first round

AmaZulu 3

Ajax Cape Town 3

AmaZulu won 4-3 on penalties

Khama Billiat of Ajax and Ayanda Dlamini of Usuthu both netted braces in this see-saw match .

March 13 - Absa Premiership

Orlando Pirates 3

Kaizer Chiefs 2

Bucs seemed to catch Chiefs napping as they raced into a 3-0 lead inside 25 minutes, Benni McCarthy netting a brace and Andile Jali the other. Amakhosi might have folded after that but kept fighting and were rewarded with goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Lehlohonolo Majoro .

August 18 - MTN8 semi, first leg

Moroka Swallows 3

Mamelodi Sundowns 3

With the scores deadlocked at 2-2 just past the hour mark, Bennett Chenene thought he had stolen it for the visiting Birds but Edward Manqele provided the final twist .

October 7 - Absa Premiership

Black Leopards 3

SuperSport United 3

Clifford Mulenga and Mabhuti Khenyeza had SuperSport seemingly cruising at 2-0, but their unusually resolute defence fell to pieces .

November 4 - Telkom Knockout, quarterfinal

Bloemfontein Celtic 3

Pirates 3

Celtic won 5-3 on penalties

Arguably one of the greatest cup matches ever played in South Africa. A spectacular Joel Mogorosi overhead kick four minutes into injury time rounded off an unlikely comeback for Celtic, who had been behind the entire match. A deflated Pirates lost in the shootout as Oupa Manyisa saw his spot-kick saved.

November 20 - Absa Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs 3

Moroka Swallows 2

The PSL has a growing reputation for late drama, and it doesn't get much later than this 97th-minute strike from Lehlohonolo Majoro to win this pulsating Soweto derby.

December 8 - Absa Premiership

Platinum Stars 6

Lamontville Golden Arrows 4

This game had a bit of everything, including a PSL record 10 goals. The in-form Stars raced into a 2-0 lead but it was Arrows who led 4-2 at half-time. But this Stars side is made of stern stuff and they were rampant in the second period, netting four times.
