Santos fire head coach Nooij

NATIONAL First Division outfit Santos have fired their Dutch coach Martinus Nooij after a string of poor results.

Nooij is the second Dutchman to be fired as head coach in South Africa this month following the departure of Johan Neeskens from Mamelodi Sundowns. Neeskens has since been replaced by Pitso Mosimane.

Nooij, 58, joined the People's Team in April this year after club chairman Goolam Alie recruited him from Mozambique. This was after he was fired as head coach of their national squad, who failed to qualify for the previous Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Santos have been blowing hot and cold in the NFD league. They are lying ninth in the 16-club second tier league with 14 points from 11 games.

Santos have won three matches, drew five and lost three.

Alie and Nooij could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Last weekend, Santos were defeated 1-0 by Pat Malabela's struggling Dynamos, who are now under the watchful eye of former Platinum Stars coach Owen Da Gama.

Mpumalanga Black Aces top the NFD with 25 points from 12 matches, with Thanda Royal Zulu second on 20 points from 10 games.

NFD clubs have closed for the festive season and will resume their league programme on February 13 after the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
