AJAX Amsterdam will take up an option on Thulani Serero's contract to keep him at the club for a further two years.

Serero joined the Amsterdam club in May last year on a two-year deal from Ajax Cape Town, with the option to renew for a further two seasons.

The Dutch club's manager, Frank de Boer, has now confirmed that they would be exercising that option and said he was pleased with the progress of the 22-year-old.

"After the winter break we will have talks with Serero. We are very pleased with him and I don't think there will be any problems," De Boer said.

It is excellent news for the Soweto-born star, whose time in Holland has been blighted by injury.

He was used off the bench in his first season, when fit, but also struggled with weight problems and injury.

He began the new campaign in excellent form, though, and having been entrusted with a first-team place, netted three goals in four starts for the club. But an injury sustained against ADO Den Haag on September 23 has kept him sidelined for the past three months. He did play his first 45 minutes of football last Monday for the club's reserves and is back in contention for a first-team place.

Serero has also been included in Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund's training squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and if he can prove his fitness, is a certainty to be selected.

"We all know what a good player Serero is, he would give us something different," Igesund said. "Even if he can give us 60 or 70 minutes in a game then it might be worth having him in our squad."
