PLATINUM Stars and Lamontville Golden Arrows set a record for the most goals scored in a Premier Soccer League match in their remarkable 6-4 encounter in Phokeng on Saturday.

The match beats the previous record of nine goals in a single top-flight match since the start of the PSL competition in the 1996-97 season - a feat that was achieved on six occasions.

Saturday's game saw Stars race to a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes, trail 4-2 at halftime, and then score four unanswered goals in the second period to seal their eighth win in nine games and move level on 28 points with second-placed Orlando Pirates.

A goal in injury-time from Thuso Phala set the record, which had stood since the very first PSL season.

Chiefs defeated Witbank Aces 7-2 in the 1996-97 campaign with Pollen Ndlanya getting four goals for AmaKhosi.

Chiefs also defeated Cape Town Spurs 5-4 in the 1998-99 season, and that same year Manning Rangers beat Vaal Professionals by the same scoreline.

Supersport thumped AmaZulu 8-1 in 2003-04, the last time nine goals were scored in a top-flight game.
