PSL to help Igesund gear up for Afcon

THE Premier Soccer League has pledged its support to Bafana Bafana, guaranteeing that national coach Gordon Igesund will have more time to prepare the team for the 2013 Afcon finals.

In truly patriotic spirit, re-elected league chairman Irvin Khoza said Igesund would have access to players at their respective clubs.

"He will also have access to their training sessions, where he can engage with club coaches to discuss the targeted players."

Khoza said the PSL wanted to see Bafana Bafana excel in the 16-nation tournament, adding that their clubs would release the selected players on December 19 for Igesund to start working with them.

Khoza, who returned to his post unopposed for a fifth term last Thursday, said they were working closely with Safa to accommodate Igesund's programme.

"We are fully behind Bafana Bafana, and we have adopted some points of cooperation with Safa to ensure we avoid unnecessary surprises. We will give him (Igesund) enough time to work with the PSL players because we want Bafana Bafana to do well in the tournament. This is our national team."

On his re-election, Khoza said he appreciated the support from the clubs and said the new executive would strive for unity in South African football and that he was hopeful the new committee would take the NSL to greater heights.

"The focus now will be to continue to be relevant in the marketplace, and continue to impress our sponsors who have been supportive of the leadership of the league even during a difficult economic climate."

Khoza also paid tribute to Jomo Sono and Goolam Allie, two members of the previous executive committee who did not stand for re-election.

"Sono and Allie have made a massive contribution - they won't be lost to the league administration.

"We have subcommittees where we hope they will continue doing a great job in the growth of the league."

He also praised AmaZulu chairman Patrick Sokhela, who opted not to stand due to ill-health.

Meanwhile, Safa deputy president Mandla Mazibuko congratulated Khoza for preaching the gospel of unity in local soccer.

The only new face on the executive committee is Daniel Simelane from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The other committee members are Kaizer Motaung, Mike Mokoena, David Thidiela, John Comitis, Mato Madlala and Stan Matthews.
