Class of 96 give lesson in skill and control

CLIVE Barker heaped praise on his SA Legends squad after South Africa's 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) winners defeated the visiting German Legends 2-1 in Polokwane on Saturday.

"We showed a lot of character out there," said Barker, who guided Bafana Bafana to their only Afcon title. "We showed that we can still play a bit and Zane (Moosa) and Doc (Khumalo) reminded me of those glory days.

"I think they were brilliant and I have said this in the past, but Mark Fish was phenomenal as well.

"I thought Jerry (Sikhosana) took his goal very well and Doc had the crowd on their feet.

"Football is entertainment and I'd like to believe we gave the spectators what they wanted."

German coach Eric Rutemoller said the South Africans were worthy winners of the game, which was played in honour of the late Bafana Bafana assistant coach Thomas Madigage.

"We knew the South Africans were technically good and very, very skilful," Rutemoller said.

"We aimed to close them down but it proved simply impossible - especially their No15 (Khumalo) who really had a fantastic match as he controlled the pace of the game."

Sikhosana came off the bench for Phil Masinga and curled in a beauty past German goalkeeper Oliver Reck in the 47th minute to give the South Africans the lead.

Khumalo crowned the afternoon's performance by slipping the ball in from under the diving Reck after a great through ball from Moosa in the 57th minute. A soft penalty was converted by Marko Rehmer as the German side bagged a consolation goal in the dying stages. - Sapa

Clive had the best players, who were all hungry for sucess. that is why we saw a very good game on sat.
let the young ones be inspired by what we saw on ssb, coz sabc is so buzy showing our kids genetations they dont even have time to show a rapeat game of the legends to the public. nowadays if you dont have dstv you cant enjoy the beautiful game of soccer. I dont blame SIzwe, Baba Mthethwa and Carol for leaving sabc, clearly they saw that the is no future there, the quetions is who is next? Duane mayb Qebo or lese Briam Mofokeng.
