Bobo to coach Chiefs
KAIZER Chiefs have roped in Gcobani Bobo as their coach... of their sevens rugby team, that is.
The former Springbok star will coach the Amakhosi team that will feature in the inaugural NBM Rugby Sevens Premier League tournament in George, Western Cape, on December 14 and 15.
Another former Springbok, Breyton Paulse, will captain the team. The rest of the team will comprise players from the Bulls and Lions franchises.
Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung explained the club's decision at a media briefing yesterday.
"For us, Kaizer Chiefs making history is what we are all about. We are no stranger to rugby. We have been using rugby stadiums for some of our matches. We were also involved in promoting the recent Springbok test match (against New Zealand) at Soccer City a few weeks ago," she said.
"We will use this tournament to take the Chiefs brand to new markets.
"We are delighted to have Gcobani and Breyton as coach and captain of the Chiefs rugby sevens team. We have no doubt we will make history by being crowned the inaugural winners of the tournament."
Tournament promoter Willem Strauss said they decided to approach Chiefs because the soccer team commanded massive support. "Chiefs are the number one soccer brand in South Africa and Africa. It's going to be a great tournament."
Bobo said he has always been a great fan of Chiefs.
"When I was still a youngster, I used to play soccer and it was my dream to play for Chiefs one day," he said.
Paulse is also thrilled to be part of Amakhosi.
