Kaizer Chiefs sign up a rugby team

Famous soccer club registers a side to play rugby sevens

"We are pleased to announce that Kaizer Chiefs will be fielding a RUGBY team at the NBM 7s Premier League tournament in George," the club announced on Twitter today.

The rugby tournament will take place in George on the 14th and 15th of December.

The Kaizer Chiefs rugby team will be captained by Breyton Paulse, and coached by Gcobani Bobo. Both are former Springboks.

Paulse also tweeted: "It's official guys, I'm the Kaizer Chiefs Cappy".

Rugby sevens is a format of the game where teams field 7 players instead of the usual 15. It makes for an all-action game played at fast pace. Usually, there are fewer tackles and plenty of tries being scored, due to the reduced number of players on the field.

According to the International Rugby Board, the current top teams in Sevens Rugby are:  Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Argentina, France, Australia, Samoa, Spain and England.

This NBM 7 tournament is a new event, and will take place the week after the IRB Sevens Rugby tournament in Port Elizabeth, the George Herald reports.

The prize money is R1-million for the winning team.

Eleven commercial teams, compiled from the world's 7s and 15-format rugby players, will compete alongside the South African Super Rugby sides.

And now, Amakhosi too.
