His salary is R50,000 a month

Mashego had been caught driving at 171kmh in his silver Jeep near the Olifantsfontein off-ramp on the R21 on Saturday. He was later released on R1,500 police bail.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court not to suspend or scrap his driver's licence.

Mashego told the court he was a first-time offender, had a four-year-old son, travelled to work and would not be able to pay a chauffeur with his salary of R50,000 a month.

He was fined R10,000 or 12 months' imprisonment, R5,000 of which was suspended for five years.

Tim Sukazi, Mashego's agent, said the striker was remorseful.

"He pleaded guilty, clearly showing he is remorseful. It was unfortunate that he got himself in this situation. He will make a special effort to be an ambassador in road safety initiatives as part of his contribution to society."

Katlego Mashego don`t be ashamed or remorsefull here , they is nothing to be ashamed of, you are not the only one driving at that speed on that road , just last nite I clocked 300km/hr in my AMG on that road , and it was nice I enjoyed it , even though it was only for about 12 minutes, and there were no trafiic cops otherwise they should have taken my license, so Katlego Mashego, to me you were crawling not speeding
