Pienaar rests, but not seven teammates

Oct 16, 2012 | Sy Lerman | 13 comments

STEVEN Pienaar might struggle to fit in country and club football, but not so seven of his Everton teammates.

RETIRED: Steven Pienaar

While the former Bafana Bafana captain sat out South Africa's friendly against Poland at the weekend after announcing his retirement from international football, seven Everton players were representing their countries.

Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka were in the England side that trounced San Marino 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Kevin Mirallas scored in Belgium's crucial 3-0 World Cup qualifier win against Serbia.

John Heitinga was in the thick of the action, helping Holland to a 3-0 win over Andorra. Nikica Jelavic scored for Croatia in a 2-1 win over Macedonia and goalkeeper Tim Howard helped the US beat Antigua and Barbuda 2-1.

Seamus Coleman was the only Everton international on the losing side when Ireland were beaten 6-1 by Germany.

All this appears to confirm manager David Moyes's assertion that Everton did not try to persuade Pienaar to retire from international football.

Last week Moyes said he encouraged his players to perform at international level.

"It hones their game and makes them better players," he said.

I respect Sy lermans work but this story is not telling the reader the true picture of Pienaars retirement.Of all the players he is mentioning here only Tim Howard travelled long distance because from
Heathrow to JFK its 7 hours 40 minutes all the other players were only playing within Europe and majority of them in the UK and for Pienaar it would have taken him 11 hours to fly from London to Johannesburg and catch a flight to Kenya for instance which is 4 hours 5 minutes so all in all he would fly 15 hours and then after 2 days or so fly back, that is whats killing him and a lot of African players, that is why most of the times African teams they organise camps in Europe so that players can attend without having to fly longer. And with the injuries he has been experiencing it was gonna take its toll on him sooner rather than later especially after doing this over 10 years. We need to respect his decision and wish him well he has been patriotic now his career is coming to an end in less than 5 years while Sy Lerman will still be writing in 15 years.Lets not try to turn the nation agains Pienaar lets help the nation understand his decision please

Pienaar is in predicament, his team is enjoying the best start in EPL, he's an integral part of that team, they pay his monthly salary, the AFCON is just around the corner, it happens at the most important time in the EPL. He was probably told "We cannot loose you for a month at such a crucial time under ANY circumstances, you need to make a choice", which he did. He'll come out of retirement after AFCON that im certain of. Lets respect his decision, even if we don't necessarily agree with it

Nothing will ever take away the fact that you are a quality player.

Nothing matters when it is your decision that you will by without fear or prejudice

Nothing matters because everyone, including this haters with negative comments, lives by their decisions too.

Schillo, the BB project never took off after 19996. You gave this nation 10yrs of frustration; playing with players who can’t even stop the ball to their advantage, playing all those years without silverware, failing to even go through the first round of any tournament, etc.

So, can anyone of these haters really tell us what you will be missing from this team? Their frustration is only because you are a quality player and that they know you have always been effective when duty called.

You had injuries that nearly ended your career but still gave this nation all your support; even during dark days, as if there were ever greener days in that set up.

SAcans never appreciate a thing; but are quick to judge when you trot the other way. Even when you share their view, they still criticize without full knowledge of events.

You are definitely losing nothing in retiring from this continuously failing project. It’s even worse because you also came through other streams which still experience the same fate.

Good luck with the rest of your career player
