Moroka Swallows soccer player Katlego Mashego appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court yesterday after being caught driving at 171km/h in a 120km/h zone.

The 30-year-old faces charges of reckless and negligent driving after being caught speeding on Olifantsfontein Road in Midrand on Saturday.

The striker, who is a former Orlando Pirates player, told the magistrate that he had already paid R1,000 bail when he was arrested at the weekend.

When asked how he intended to plead, he said guilty.

The magistrate decided to postpone the case and asked Mashego if this week would be appropriate for him to appear.

"Any time is fine," Mashego replied.

When the magistrate asked if Friday was fine, Mashego asked if the matter could be postponed to Thursday instead.

This may be because his team has an away game against Maritzburg United on Saturday and would need time to travel to Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, for the match.

The case was postponed to Thursday.

Mashego left the building using a different exit to the one the general public is allowed to use.

Following his appearance, Mashego drove off in a silver Golf, not the Jeep he was allegedly caught speeding in.

Previously:

- The Platinum Stars duo of Joseph "Tight" Molongoane and Thuso Phala have been caught speeding.

Molongoane was caught travelling at over 200km\h in a 60km/h zone last year between Kransko and Mantsole in Limpopo;

Four months earlier, it was Molongoane's team mate Thuso Phala who was arrested for speeding. Phala was arrested on the N4 near Brits in the North West, allegedly doing 194km\h;

- Radio personality Gareth Cliff was arrested earlier this year doing more than 180km/h in a 120/km/h zone. Cliff was arrested in Pretoria in March this year.
