After another off-field misdemeanour, Ashley Cole will hope to do his talking on the pitch again and nudge England closer to the World Cup in Poland on Tuesday.
The defender didn’t feature in Friday’s 5-0 rout of Marino, with coach Roy Hodgson insisting that wasn’t punishment for a vulgar Twitter outburst against the Football Association.
Whether he was dropped or rested, Cole now can’t reach a century of England appearances in Warsaw.
But on his 99th international showing on Tuesday, Cole will be the most experienced member of the defence as England copes without John Terry, who quit international football before the FA punished him for racially abusing an opponent.
In Group H, England has a three-point lead over Montenegro and Poland, who have a game in hand.
