Sdinile heads for WBA meet

BUDDING boxing promoter Andile Sdinile's success has earned him the invite to the WBA's annual convention in Jakarta, Indonesia.

This comes few days after Sdinile's well-organised WBA title fight between newly crowned junior middleweight champion Layla "Amazing" McCarter and Noni "She Bee Stingin" Tenge. Sdinile presented this championship fight at East London's Orient Theatre last weekend.

It was the first WBA female title fight to take place in East London and it also marked the return of the WBA in South Africa. It's been 18 years since Dingaan "The Rose of Soweto" Thobela failed to reclaim the WBA lightweight title from Russian Orzubek Nazarov in Hammanskraal in 1994.

Thobela was a ringside guest in Sdinile's maiden tourney that was sold out at the famous 1500-seater boxing venue.

WBA vice-president Stan Christodoulou, the Hall of Fame inductee, who was fight supervisor for the Tenge-McCarter fight, invited Sdinile to Jakarta for the convention that starts from October 29 to November 10.

"This is the starting point for me," said Sdinile. "As a new promoter I want to establish the relationship with the WBA and also establish the working relations with promoters around the world for the benefit of South African fighters."

He said no boxer will fight exclusively under his promotion. "No boxer will be contracted to Sijuta Boxing Promotion because I don't believe in doing that," said the eloquent former board member of Boxing SA. "The agreement must be mutual. I want to try and provide good fights for SA fighters and the public - period."
