SIYANDA Xulu got his first taste of Russian Premier League action on Sunday but it was not a happy league debut for the youngster as his FC Rostov side were humbled 4-0 by Rubin Kazan.

Xulu, who made his first start for the team in a cup game last week, was introduced on 57 minutes to replace former Liverpool midfielder Florent Sinama Pongolle after his team had been reduced to 10 men.

A red card for centre-back Kornel Saláta meant Xulu was drafted into that position, and with the former now facing a three-match suspension, it could open the opportunity for a first start at Terek Grozny on Friday.

Bongani Khumalo was involved in a fiery fixture that saw three red cards and 13 yellows as PAOK trounced Aris 4-1 in the Greek League on Sunday. Khumalo was the recipient of a yellow himself, but managed to help his team win, which leaves them in second place on the table.

Steven Pienaar continued his fine form in helping Everton to second in the English Premier League with a 3-1 home win over Southampton.

Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says he will do everything in his power to keep Pienaar in the national team set-up, especially important now that playmaker Thulani Serero is set to miss the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations through injury.

Andrew Surman's Norwich City were thumped 5-2 by Liverpool, while in the English Championship there were wins for Kagisho Dikgacoi (Crystal Palace 1-0 against Bolton) and a first of the season for Kgosi Ntlhe (Peterborough 3-1 against Hull). Ntlhe started on the bench and was brought on in the second period.

Kamohelo Mokotjo again missed out on a starting spot for Feyenoord as they won 5-1 at home to NEC in the Eredivisie. Bafana striker Dino Ndlovu could not make an impact for struggling Maccabi Haifa in Israel as they drew 0-0 at Hapoel Akko.

The third most successful club in Israeli football history, Haifa have won none of their first five league games this season and are third-bottom in the table.

It was a good weekend for Darren Keet as he put in another fine display to help Kortrijk to a 2-1 win over Belgian giants Standard Liege in the Jupiter League. Keet has been the top goalkeeper in the Belgian League this season and showed why again on Saturday with a number of fine saves.

It was not such a good weekend for rising star Ayanda Patosi though as he started for Lokeren in their 3-0 defeat at champions Anderlecht. He was taken off in the second half.
