Experts back United to win

SUPERSPORT United go into tomorrow's MTN8 final against Moroka Swallows as favourites to walk away with the Premier Soccer League's season-opening tournament.

This was the majority view of some soccer legends interviewed ahead of the eagerly awaited final at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Kickoff is at 8.15pm.

Of the six senior citizens of South African soccer, four are tipping Matsatsantsa a Pitori to win their second successive PSL title.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Daniel "Mambush" Mudau, pictured, former Jomo Cosmos and Pirates winger Eugene Zwane, ex Bafana Bafana and Bloemfontein Celtic striker Benjamin Reed and former Banyana Banyana coach August Makalakalane are all backing United to prevail.

"It will be one of the greatest finals because both teams have been doing well. I have no doubt United will be the last team standing," said Mudau.

"United have a cup pedigree. On the other hand, Swallows are hungry for success. It will be a great final but I will go with United to win ."

Makalakalane felt that United were not playing well but getting the results, "which is the most important thing".

But former Orlando Pirates and Mahwelereng Real Rovers defender Gerald "Mgababa" Raphahlela is putting his money on Swallows.

"It's good that the final is played in Orlando, where they used to win trophies in the past with greats like Thomas Hlongwane, Ace Mnini and William Makhura," he said.

"Swallows have assembled a great team of players like Siyabonga Nomvethe, David Mathebula and Katlego Mashego, who have won many trophies with previous clubs. There will be no stage fright, unlike SuperSport, where coach Gavin Hunt is rebuilding the team with many new players. I tip Swallow to win this one."

Former Witbank Black Aces defender and African Youth Sport Academy development coach Dan "Dance" Malete also gave Swallows the edge in the final because of experience.
