Mokoena coaches SAPS side

FORMER semi-professional soccer player Lucas "Dula" Mokoena is on track to realising his dream of competing on the international stage.

Mokoena, who played for Spartak in the National First Division, was appointed head coach of the South African Police Service team.

Born in Stinkwater village in North West, Mokoena is also the coach of celebrated social club Fatcats.

A member of the police service based at Jeppe in Johannesburg, Mokoena used to play for the station's team, where his skills were recognised with a call-up to play for the Gauteng provincial and national team.

After hanging up his boots, Mokoena, 43, decided to pursue a new career in coaching.

Mokoena has been winning titles with Fat Cats FC, who are still to lose a game this season in the Company Football League.

"This is a great honour. To be selected as the national coach of my country's police services is a privilege for me," said Mokoena, who is starting his new job next week at the annual provincial championships in Pretoria.

"This is where we will be selecting the national team for the World Police and Fire Championships in Northern Ireland later this year and other international competitions.

"Growing up I always wanted to see myself wearing the national colours. This is a dream come true for me."

Fat Cats director Gaba Bhengu said they were proud of Mokoena's achievement.
