January 2009: Mbombela Municipal speaker Jimmy Mohlala, who was about to open a fraud case against Lefika Emerging Equity, a company co-owned by Motaung, is assassinated;

January 18 2009: Motaung threatens to gag our sister paper Sunday World from publishing new "defamatory" material about his company;

January 25 2009: Sunday World reports that Mbombela municipality would launch its bid to terminate its contract with Motaung's company. This after the South African Revenue Service informed the municipality that Lefika used a fraudulently obtained tax clearance certificate to build the R1-billion 2010 World Cup stadium;

December 13 2009: Mbombela municipal manager Jacob Dladla was found guilty of corrupt practices related to the R920-million Mbombela Stadium scandal;

November 7 2011: Sowetan reports that the Mbombela municipality resolved a week earlier not to pursue fraud and corruption allegations against people implicated in the scandal, including Motaung;

August 15 2012: Motaung and another suspect are arrested in Gauteng and Western Cape respectively. A third suspect surrenders.
