Well-balanced Birds poised to swoop
MOROKA Swallows believe they have a balanced team capable of bringing home the silverware this season and have promised to give their best in every game they play.
This assurance to Birds' fans was given by newly appointed head coach Zeca Marques at a press conference after the team's training session in Germiston yesterday.
Marques was speaking ahead of their season opener against Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Royal Bafokeng Sport Palace in Phokeng on Sunday.
"Stars are an unknown quantity at the moment. They have a new coach who is young and represents a new generation. Cavin Johnson comes through youth development and is knowledgeable. They also have a young squad mixed with experienced players and we are wary of them. The weather is on our side but we should be able to play whether it's hot or cold," said the amiable mentor.
Marques believes that while he has a squad of about 27 players, this doesn't disadvantage Swallows in any way as this is the trend even in Europe. Swallows have had strikers Katlego "Mahoota" Mashego and Diyo Sibisi training with them in the past few weeks. But yesterday only Mashego was seen at training.
Stars will use this game to parade new recruits such as Benson Mhlongo, Patrick Malokase and Siphelele Mthembu.
- The PSL and Absa have signed a new five-year deal for the Premiership ending weeks of speculation on the sponsors of the premier division.
