MAMELODI Sundowns are set to sign Dutch defender Alje Schut on a two-year contract, Sowetan can reveal.

The 31-year-old has been lured to SA by Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens after 13 seasons at Dutch Eredvisie side Utrecht and arrived in the country this week to complete the formalities of the deal. The central defender has made almost 170 appearances for Utrecht since making his debut in 1999 after coming through the youth system at Feyenoord.

Injuries have curtailed his appearances to some degree down the years, though in the last campaign he was a regular for the side, making 24 appearances.

Schut requested the transfer having learned of Neeskens' interest and is expected to be unveiled soon. Utrecht managing director Wilco van Schaik said his club would not stand in the player's way.

"Alje has asked us whether he may go (to Sundowns). We will make it easy for him because Utrecht has meant so much to him," Van Schaik said.

Schut is described as physically strong and excellent in the air, with a good turn of pace as well.

He does hold one dubious record - in the 2010-11 season he equalled the record for the most own goals in a single campaign, four in the first half of the season.

If he was good he surely would not come to Africa.

His four own goals, yhoo, is not Ayoba, the last time we had a guy called Craig Biancam he scored three own goals in one season.

The Real Madrid of Mzanzi. U can sign all the stars in the universe but u will never get a single silverwear. All u known is to push deals under the carpet behind other teams backs. What happened to Peter Ndovu, Papi Zothwane, Benson Mhlongo etc.... God is not stupid, u will never come right ka bonokwane bja bja lena.

He must be a nephew or some kind of in-law to this coach, he obviously been told of the kind of money Motsepe has this side.

let hope he will stabilised the shaking defence of Sundowns. We all know that since the departure of Benson Mhlongo Sundowns was always caught squared at the back. His collaboration with the player from Ajax will somehow made a good impact at the team.

The only thing that can stabilize anything at Sundowns is Motsepe selling this club, he has failed the supporters. Sundowns supporters can no longer boast about the score line, all they boast about in Motsepe's fat cheque, this is soccer baba, we want to know the score.
