Low-cost houses at 2010 World Cup venues?

Convert Cape Town soccer stadium into housing: Cosatu

WORLD-CLASS: The Greenpoint Stadium

Cape Town Stadium should be converted into low-cost houses, the Western Cape Congress of SA Trade Unions says.

“Cosatu has had discussions with engineers and architects who feel that it is possible to turn the stadium into low-cost housing for people in Cape Town,” provincial leader Tony Ehrenreich said.

“This represents an important opportunity to integrate black and white communities, which we should not miss out on.”

The city recently announced it was considering various options to make the R4.5 billion structure in Green Point sustainable.

Maintenance amounted to about R44m a year, with very few hiring activities taking place due to the cost of using the venue.

One proposal was to convert it into a commercial hub, but this had been met with resistance from residents, who did not want added noise and activity.

Ehrenreich said if public funds were being spent on the stadium, it should benefit the most vulnerable citizens.

“The community of Green Point, who does not want further commercial activities in the stadium, should support the plans to promote the building of affordable housing.”

How?

Why not punt anti-corruption as means to build more houses?

Oh P!ss off man really! If we do one, we can do other 2010 venues too, like Nelspruit and FNB Stadium, and Peter Mokaba. And Nelson Mandela Bay...really take this idea and shove it up your as.s. It's ridiculous.

“This represents an important opportunity to integrate black and white communities, which we should not miss out on.”

Now this is a comment driven by inferiority complex. Why are some col0ureds always so eager to cosy up to white people??? Why can't they have their own community and have confidence in themselves to run it efficiently??? You will never find a white South African eager to live beside col0ured but our coloured brother always want to live beside white folks. Quite sad really that is what some of people amongst our race have become.

There are many black people that already live in Greenpoint and Seapoint.............adding low cost housing would only damage property values in the area............turn the stadium into luxury apartments and reserve them for those black & coloured black diamond yuppies that want to live in a beautiful upmarket area.
