Johnson rewarded for saving Stars from drop
CAVIN Johnson has been rewarded for helping Platinum Stars retain their Absa Premiership status last season by being appointed full-time head coach.
Johnson was offered a three-year contract yesterday by the management of Dikwena, with former professional soccer players Allen Freeze and Willem Jackson as his joint assistants.
Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Alex Heredia has been retained by the club. Stefan Ekakale will also continue as youth and academy goalkeeper coach.
Stars general manager Jason Raine said the mandate given to Johnson and his technical staff is to ensure that Stars do not fight for survival in the Premiership as has been the case in the past.
"We offered Cavin a long- term contract as head coach because we believe he is the right man to take the club to greater heights," he said.
"We subscribe to continuity at Stars. Cavin and his team did a great job in helping us remain in the Premiership. They have laid a solid foundation and we want them to continue where they left off last season."
The knowledgeable Johnson was roped in towards the end of the season as a caretaker coach after the club parted ways with Owen da Gama.
At that time the club was left with 11 games in the league, of which Johnson and his team won six, drew two and lost three to avoid the drop to the National First Division.
This influenced the management's decision to retain them.
"It made business sense to appoint him and Allen to continue with the great job they did last season," Raine said. "Cavin is an experienced coach with an incredible track record in South African soccer."
Johnson, who is also head of Stars' academy, could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press. He has worked with various Premiership clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town.
- Soccer legend Mike "Nanana" Ntombela has been reunited with Sundowns, this time as manager of the club.
"It's a great honour to have joined Sundowns, the club that has been close to my heart," said the former Downs defender yesterday.
