SA stars set for UEFA duty
A NUMBER of South Africa's overseas stars will be keeping a keen eye on the draws for the opening rounds of the 2012-13 Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League competitions today..
Three South Africans will play in the Champions League this season, barring any moves late in the transfer window, and another eight could potentially be involved in the Europa League.
The draws for the opening two rounds of qualifying for both competitions will be made in Nyon, Switzerland.
May Mahlangu and his Swedish side Helsingborg will enter the Champions League competition in the second round of qualifying, but will know their prospective opponents when the draw is made.
Whoever Helsingborg do get, they will play them on the weeks of 17-18 July and 24-25 July.
Kamohelo Mokotjo and Dutch side Feyenoord enter the competition in the third round so will have to wait to find out their opponents. The draw for that is on July 20.
Thulani Serero's Ajax Amsterdam have won straight through to the group stages, the draw for which will be on August 30. Meanwhile, Dino Ndlovu's Israeli side Bnei Yehuda will find out their prospective second round opponents in the Europa League.
Anele Ngcongca's Belgian team Genk will enter the competition in the third round, the same stage as some of Europe's top clubs - Liverpool, Inter Milan and Marseille.
Maritimo, who have a trio of South Africans on their books - Sergio Marakis, Miguel Rodrigues and Brad Wexler, will also enter at this stage.
Ayanda Patosi and his Lokeren side will enter at the play-off stage, their reward for winning the Belgian Cup last season.
If Steven Pienaar and Bongani Khumalo remain at Tottenham Hotspur in the new season, they will enter the Europa League competition at the group stages.

Israeli, Sedish, Belgian sides are rubbish. Hardly counts. They don't stand a chance. No better than playing in China really. Or Qatar for that matter.Report Abuse

@WarrenG if we are honest our footballers are not even cutting it in the continent, what give them impression that they will be chosen against best players in the continent?SAns have something in common with England, they think highly of themselves iro football, but when it comes to the crunch they are left breathless, like Wayne Rooney last night, tjo that boy is overrated.
