Igesund expects Safa to move quickly

MOROKA Swallows coach Gordon Igesund expects to hear from the South African Football Association about the Bafana Bafana coaching job before the week is out.

Igesund, one of the leading candidates to succeed axed coach Pitso Mosimane in the Bafana post, arrived home from China with his club yesterday after they competed at the Shanghai tournament where they finished second.

"I don't want to talk about whether I will or will not (take the Bafana job) at this moment. We will have to look at the situation (first)," Igesund said.

Igesund expressed his sympathy for Mosimane, who was fired following Bafana's shock 1-1 draw with lowly ranked Ethiopia in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Rustenburg on Sunday. He added that he was "honoured" to be linked with the Bafana post, but would not get "too excited".

Safa are hoping to appoint a new coach in time for Bafana's October 12 friendly against Poland.

Steve Komphela was appointed caretaker coach on Monday and will be in charge of Bafana's World Cup qualifier against Botswana in Gaborone on Saturday and the June 15 friendly against Gabon.

Igesund said he expected Safa to contact him and Swallows chairman Leon Prins before the end of the week.

"I was in this situation 10 years ago, then again about four years ago and ended up not getting the job. Safa know what they are doing and if anything happens, I am sure it will be in the next couple of days," said the decorated mentor.

Igesund is South Africa's most successful coach in domestic football, having won four Premier League titles with different teams.

In the recent season, he turned Swallows into title contenders from relegation material the season before.

He said he was still contracted to the Dube Birds but hinted that, if the right channels were followed, he would be available for Bafana.

"The club is happy, I'm happy and have a contract there," he said.

"Safa will have to first talk to Leon and he will have a chat with me. Let's wait and see. I'm not going to jump up and down with excitement now."

Meanwhile, Bafana have dropped one place in the Fifa rankings released yesterday. South Africa are now placed 68th by the football governing body and 15th in Africa. Next month's rankings could see Bafana either improve their position or further plummet when results against Ethiopia and Botswana in the World Cup qualifiers are taken into consideration.

The friendly against Gabon will also influence the rankings.
