Sangweni deserved player of the season title, not Nomvethe

May 30, 2012 | Letter to the Editor | 56 comments

ALLOW me to register my concern and unhappiness over the dodgy selection of the Absa player of the season.

Siyabonga Sangweni

Facts and common sense dictate that the Absa player of the season should have been Siyabonga Sangweni, not Bhele Nomvethe, for obvious reasons. How a player who has performed so consistently in all cup competitions and even helped his club win a league title gets overlooked, boggles the mind.

What more was Sangweni expected to do? Score 21 goals? I mean, without taking anything away from Bhele, who worked hard this season, scoring 20 goals to become the PSL's top goalscorer (which was his job), but was that enough? Did it win his team the league?

Had it not been for Sangweni's teamwork, brilliance and never-say- die spirit, I believe Pirates would not have won the league this season. There were times when the league title looked like evading Pirates but Sangweni stood above the rest and single-handedly salvaged the situation. Isn't this what we want from a player of the season?

For a long time in the PSL we have been crowning mediocrity over excellence. First it was Teko Modise who was chosen as the Absa footballer of the year from a Pirates side that failed to win any silverware. Next it was Thulani Serero from Ajax Cape Town, who had a barren season, and now it is Nomvethe from a Swallows team who have nothing to show for their efforts but a No 2 spot in the league. Is this enough?

cud'nt have said it better man, Nomvete is a very good predator in front of goals, that I will give to him. but in terms of working hard to help your team win cups and tittles the other Siyabonga shud have taken it home. it is Nomvethe's job to score goals and he was rewarded for that, whereas Sangweni scored some crucial goals for his team and it is not his job to score goals.

But you know what they say, Bucs is the limit....

That's your own view, I think Nomvethe deserves it more than Sangweni. If Sangweni is the real deal, he will maintain his current form and he will definately get something next season.

TrippleXXX

This Sowetan idiot called Xolisa is a rotten Rat and very sour also.

Modise won it twice whilst playing for the Rats it was never an issue...

The Rats deserve to be trebble champs in a row and no one is disputing that coz they worked hard for it.

And so is Nomvethe, he deserves it 100%

This is not about Pirates or any team for that matter, the wrighter has clearly stated that Teko has won it back to back while he was at Pirates and it was wrong, Serero won it last season and it was wrong, and now Nomvethe won it and it is wrong. All those teams had not won anything when their players won this cup. so that is seen as promoting mediocrity.

@ Zebras, we cannot correct one wrong with another.

@Xolisa Sirayi :

Lets give credit where is due, there can only be one winner.Besides,Nomvete was voted by other team players and coaches. You can't tell me that all those who decided Nomvete were wrong, Sangweni had a fantastic season I agree with you.Majority rule wins! Stop being a nuisance and swallow your bitterness.
