Slim chance of Swallows playing in African League

THERE is little chance Moroka Swallows might also get to play in the African Champions League next year, alongside Premier Soccer League winners Orlando Pirates.

Swallows might have qualified for the continent's top club competition on the basis of being league runners-up, but South Africa has lost the special status it previously enjoyed . and is not likely to get it back soon.

The country has fallen dramatically down the rankings of best performers in African club competitions, which is the list that determines which countries are allowed extra entries in the annual tournaments.

The top 12 countries on the list are allowed to have two competitors in each of the two annual pan-African competitions - the Champions League and the African Confederation Cup.

South Africa had the privilege from when the additional numbers were first allowed in 2004 but lost the double entry status two years ago because of poor results.

Embarrassingly, the country is now below countries like Mali, Libya and Zimbabwe on the list.

In the last two years there has been no redeeming performances from South African clubs to bump up the coefficient, although the current run by Black Leopards in the Confederation Cup will give South Africa a boost for 2014.
