Gavin Hunt can complete cup double, eight years on

GAVIN Hunt has the chance to achieve a cup double on Saturday - by winning the country's premier knockout trophy for a second time.

They take on cross-town rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Orlando Stadium in Soweto at 3pm.

But it would come after an eight-year hiatus because Hunt's only previous cup success came during his spell at Moroka Swallows in 2004 when the Birds beat Manning Rangers in the final.

Contrary to reports in recent weeks, Hunt has a cup-winning pedigree to go along with his reputation for league success, where he won three successive championship campaigns with Matsatsantsa.

His counterpart on the opposing bench, Johan Neeskens, seeks his first piece of silverware in South African football in his first season.

But the cup is more of a consolation after the disappointment of the Brazilians again failing in their quest for a league title.

Hunt's previous success came at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein in June 2004 where Swallows beat Rangers 3-1 in the final.

Of that winning side, only Peter Petersen (now at Maritzburg United) is still active in the top flight. The losing Rangers side was coached by Steve Komphela.

The record for the highest number of successes in South African football's top cup competition is jointly held by the late Thomas "Zero" Johnson and Eddie Lewis.

Lewis had his three triumphs with three different clubs while Johnson had all his success at Chiefs.

Coaches who have won two cup titles are Ted Dumitru, Muhsin Ertugral, Doctor Khumalo's father Eliakim "Pro" Khumalo, Roy Matthews, Kaizer Motaung, Tony Sanderson and Mario Tuani.
