Makhabane's dream dashed
BANYANA Banyana star midfielder Mamello Makhabane's London Olympics dream is over after she was forced to withdraw due to a groin injury.
Makhabane was ruled out by the medical personnel after tests were done on all players in camp at the high performance centre in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.
The Palace Super Falcons player, who could not be reached for comment, will be referred to a specialist for treatment.
A Banyana Banyana official, who asked not to be identified, said: "Mamello is devastated, she was looking forward to going to the Olympics.
"She played a massive role in helping us qualify; it's a big blow. We are all supporting her. I just hope they will make arrangements for her to travel to the Olympics."
Makhabane sustained the injury in September last year. Team coach Joseph Mkhonza and assistant Jerry Laka were also not available for comment.
Meanwhile, Russia-based Nompumelelo Nyandeni will feature for Banyana against Zambia in Lusaka on May 26 despite withdrawing from the camp in Potchefstroom. The match will be SA's first African Women's Championships qualifier.
Nyandeni's club, Rossiyanka FC, have agreed to release her next week.
Another overseas-based player, Kylie-Ann Louw, will join the team after she attends her graduation ceremony at Stephen Austin College in the US this weekend.
